Imagine how it would feel being able to write your first draft without overwhelm and persistent self-doubt...

YOUR NOVEL ADVENTURE

IS BACK!

Your Novel Adventure is a group writing program designed to support you to achieve more of your writing goals and show up more consistently for your writing practice so you can complete the first draft of your book within 12 months.

Starting and finishing the first draft of my debut book felt like such an impossibly large task and Your Novel Adventure grew from the same plan I used to write the first draft of The Little Black Book of Publishing!

Lucky for you - you’re getting the glow up version!

When writing the first draft felt too big, returning to my writing plan helped me work through my emotional struggles with fear and doubt, and allowed me to track my progress and see just how far I had come.

Your Novel Adventure takes a big picture approach to writing your first draft, and breaks the process down into flexible, manageable, and actionable steps.

We all have responsibilities that dominate our time – managing a household, raising a family, caring for loved ones, paid work, unpaid work, managing illness or injury, the list goes on.

Your Novel Adventure takes a holistic approach to writing that provides tools for self-awareness, productivity, continuous learning, self-care, and adaptability to allow you to navigate writing and finishing your first draft while accommodating life's unpredictability.

And the best part is, you get to choose how to make these tools work for you. If something doesn’t work, we find out what is getting in your way and do it differently.

We’re in this together.

“Katherine has kept me accountable in the kindest and most understanding way possible. Thanks to her support, I can see the light at the end of the tunnel on the first draft of my first novel, something I've been dreaming about for years.

I highly recommend Your Novel Adventure if you've always wanted to write a novel and you just want to get it done.”

Does this sound like you?

I DON’T HAVE TIME TO WRITE

You find it hard to make time to write, and keep writing time a priority.

HELP! I’M OVERWHELMED

Writing your first draft feels like an impossibly large task, and you need help developing a clear picture of how to achieve your writing goals.

I AVOID DOING THINGS

Gentle accountability helps to maintain consistency and helps to make decisions about the things, if left to your own devices, you might not do.

I DON’T FEEL CONFIDENT

Self-doubt is the hurdle you can’t seem to clear. Maybe it makes you feel that if writing a book were so important to you, you’d be able to get past it.

Imagine if you could…

“My favourite part of the program so far, has been the accountability and the positivity. Having the list on Notion and the weekly check-ins have kept things moving even when I wasn't really feeling it, and the calls are brilliant.

It's the first time I've used a coach for my writing, and there's no way I would've been making this kind of progress without you.”

I’m Katherine!

A reader-turned-bookseller-turned-publisher-turned-literary-agent, based in Naarm, Melbourne.

I’ve just announced my debut book and it wouldn’t exist if it wasn’t for the changes I made to my writing practice.

Your Novel Adventure guided me through committing to my idea, prioritising writing time, scheduling it into my weekly routine, and translating my book idea into a structured writing plan.

Frequently asked questions.

  • There are plenty of technical writing courses that will guide you through essential concepts such as narrative structure, character development, narration, voice, plotting, scene setting and more. If this is what you need the most, I highly recommend researching what other courses will best suit your needs.

Your Novel Adventure is designed to help you find the focus you need to stay the distance and finish your first draft.

There are books and website dedicated to the craft of writing a book that you could use to learn the technical aspects you desire and implement what you learn during a structural edit block.

This program is a guided framework to provide you with:

    • planning and outlining your story and writing schedule

    • structure, accountability, and support

    • a community of writers at the same place on their writing journey

    • lessons and activities related to writing your book such as developing your style guide, building an author platform, maintaining motivation, making consistent progress and more.

  • The overall cost of the program is $1,788 AUD. Monthly payments of $149 are encouraged and will automatically be deducted each month via Debut Books.

  • Via Zoom!

  • The monthly lessons, activities and block resources will be uploaded monthly to the course portal here at Debut Books.

  • I use a program called Notion that is free to set up. I will share a tracker template with you via Notion and after every week, you will make a note of how you tracked against your weekly goal and I will sign off after.

We will also use the tracker during our Quarterly Planning Parties to set our new quarter writing goals and break them down into manageable weekly steps.

  • Research suggests that 90 days is the optimum time frame for holding focus on a project.

We will meet on Zoom every 3 months and I will run you through a series of exercises to reflect on the quarter just passed and reset with a new block and personalised weekly goals for the new quarter.

  • All the dates will be provided at the beginning of the course so you can schedule around them accordingly. However, I also understand that life happens; each session will be recorded and available to watch within 24 hours.

  • The core curriculum for Your Novel Adventure is named Choose Your Own Adventure after the popular children’s books! Writing a book is a series of adventures that will shift and change along the way. I wanted to create a flexible system that would meet each writer where they’re at.

There are four blocks, each with a single focus:

The Novel Map: This is a planning and outlining structure designed to outline your book at a top level, or diving as deep as suits your outlining desires.

Writing Awaits: You got it – in this block, writing is your ONLY focus!

Unpack Your Suitcase: The structural edit is the process of looking at the big picture of your story, including but not limited to timelines, chapter structure, character arcs etc.

Around the Campfire: Engaging with alpha readers to approach our writing with a fresh perspective. An alpha reader:

    • Is often the first person to read your first draft.

    • Approaches your work as a writer-reader, as someone who can help you identify any holes or missed-connections in your story.

    • Is looking at the big picture and helping you identify what is working, what isn’t, and what parts of your vision are not yet translating onto the page.

And finally, The Vision Method that has been designed to make the process of taking your book from concept to pitch-ready feel possible without overwhelm and persistent self-doubt.

There are three parts to The Vision Method:

    Capture the Vision

    Expanding the Vision

    Completing the Vision

Your Novel Adventure completes parts 1 and 2 of The Vision Method. Part 3 belongs to the Fully Booked Group Program.

  • Of course! For a writer who has just begun their first draft but has done little planning, quarter one could be the ‘Novel Map’ block, quarters two and three will be writing blocks, and quarter 4 could potentially be a structural editing block (or another writing block if needed).

Alternatively, a writer who has written more than half their manuscript could join the program and spend quarters one and two writing, quarter three doing a structural edit, and quarter four engaging with alpha readers for feedback on their story.

Some writers may need all 4 quarters spent in writing blocks.

Every writer’s 12-month writing adventure will be different and unique and we will work on that together in out 1:1 call.

  • Yes! You most certainly can! It will be hard, and you will have to prioritise your writing time.

In order to participate in this program, your projected writing goals need to fit within a 12-month period. For example, if you want to write a 150,000-word fantasy epic, but you can only manage writing 1000 words a week, that means your novel will potentially take you 150 weeks.

Depending on your projected word count and allocated writing time, any writing project between 50-120,000 words is achievable.

My goal for every participant is for you to finish your first draft. Completing a structural edit would be even better.

We will be completing time audit and priorities exercises before the course begins and if you’re not able to fulfil the course requirements, I will refund 75% of the first month’s payment back to you.

  • Yes, there will be a 1:1 coaching call at the beginning of the program to map our your personal 12-month writing plan.

Any further 1:1 support can be purchased and paid for separately including additional coaching calls, alpha reading and daily Voxer support.
